Our Basic Pants with Tie is a great introduction to making pants, and yes it has pockets! Since everyone loves having a pocket in their garment, we will start with them straight away! However, you can still follow along making these pants without the pockets if you don't want them. These are 'regular' waist, which means they are neither low-waist or high-rise, so they are perfect for pyjama pants, or casual linen pants.
It has 7 seams (including 2-3 pocket seams, and 3 hems - waist and 2 ankles. The tie has 3 seams, and a closing stitch.
No Notions (zips, buttons, elastic) are required for this pattern, only fabric and thread, as it is a tie-up waist which will gather the excess fabric in the waist. But if you prefer elastic in the waist, you can use that instead of making the tie.
Skills you will use:
- SEAMS X 6 (plus 6 for the pockets)
- HEMS X 2
- POCKETS x 2 - INSEAM (including the understitch)
- WAISTBAND - foldover and edgestitch
- TIE - for the waistband (or you can use elastic)
FABRIC: The best fabric to use would be a linen/rayon blend, so it gives the softness and drape. However, you can probably use a stretch, jersey stretch or even a crepe, depending on what you like the look of. This pattern can be used with nearly any fabric, making it great for beginners who feel a bit intimidated when buying fabric, and still not sure how to match a pattern to the right fabric (which can take years to learn).
HOW MUCH FABRIC? It's best to get 2.5 metres (or 2 and 3-quarter yards) ALL SIZES
There is 4 pattern pieces - Front Pants, Back Pants, Tie and Pocket - and you will cut 2 of the front, 2 of the back, 2 of the tie and 4 of the pocket (2 pieces for each side), ending up with 10 cut pieces altogether.
